Oh boy....empty bottles.

Okay...so I'm the first to review...empty bottles? I'm new to the homebrewing game since a friend gave me a Mr. Beer kit for Christmas. I ordered these empties from Amazon just before starting my first batch (it's still fermenting).
First, I was amused by the title: Mr. Beer Deluxe Bottling System? Jeez, talk about dressing up a sow's ear into a silk purse. About like calling a ballpoint pen a 'deluxe manual writing instrument'. If you read the word 'system' and thinking there would be hoses, funnels or other stuff, you'd be wrong. Just 8 bottles, 8 caps and 8 lables. All joking aside, the bottles seem quite sturdy, and the caps fit nicely. I was a little amazed by the large size: 1 US quart each. That will be a big change for someone like me who is use to sipping beer 12 ounces at a time. But if I'm doing my math right, even these eight bottles won't be enough, since the Mr. Beer kegs hold 2 and 1/2 gallons. Need to have a couple of other bottles for the extra that will be left.
These PET bottles seem well-made and should work well, but I'll write a follow-up if necessary. I do want to add that I think these plastic bottles will work best for amateurs like me for the exact reason Mr. Beer explains in their manual: The second part of fermentation takes place in the bottle, when the brew self-carbonates. If you're using glass, it's almost impossible to tell if the beer has carbonated, unless you open it. But with the plastic, you just squeeze the bottle. Just like the 20 oz. bottles of soda you buy at the store, if the beer is fully carbonated (and under pressure), the bottle will be rock hard.
Hope this helps someone who may be thinking of getting these bottles. Yeah, glass may be more 'high class' but if you drop a glass bottle...or God forbid something goes wrong and the brew explodes out of the bottle, it'll only happen once. Plastic won't shatter like glass, so the safety factor alone is worth the money. |
If you need bottles for your home brew, this is what you need.

| These bottles come with the more expensive Mr Beer kit but if you are like me and didn't get the bottles with your kit and/or realized you wanted to brew more than one batch at the same time these are both perfect for the job and pretty good value for money. Each set of 8 bottles will perfectly hold a full fresh batch of beer. You get 8 one litre plastic bottles that are brown in color to help keep the beer fresh and away from direct sunlight. I actually keep my bottles of beer in the carry box that comes with the bottles as this guarantees that they are always away from the light that is bad for the beer. Being plastic also helps the first time brewer. The Mr Beer kits use an in bottle fermentation stage. If you get this stage wrong, it can result in glass bottle alternatives exploding which can be both messy and dangerous. These plastic bottles let you feel how pressurized they currently are. When rock hard, your beer is done. It should be noted that you can use regular soda bottles after you have finished using them but I found it hard to locate brown, 1 litre bottles. These are also reusable so just get enough to brew the beer you intend to store at one time. |

In just 14 days, beginning and advanced brewers alike can enjoy a glass of premium, handcrafted beer with this home-brewing kit. The 2-1/2-gallon brewing keg features a pour tap and wide-mouth lid for easy cleaning by hand. Included with this starter kit are a can of West Coast Pale Ale mix, which produces twenty 12-ounce bottles of mild, full-bodied beer, and a single-use packet of booster, which contains all-natural carbohydrates that enhance flavor and boost alcohol content. The beer-making ingredients are simply mixed with water, left to brew in the keg at room temperature for a week, and then put into bottles (not included) for another week, during which time natural carbonation takes place. No carbon-dioxide cartridges are needed to enhance sparkle or beer head. A dozen plastic bottle caps printed with the Mr. Beer logo are also included, as well as an instruction booklet full of brewing tips and recipes. Other Mr. Beer mixes and booster packs can be ordered separately. The keg is made of FDA-compliant PVC, which does not impart taste or color, and is virtually indestructible. --Ann Bieri
